Home office poses technological challenges for companies

In the Corona crisis, many companies switched to home office and mobile working more or less voluntarily. Studies show that many of corporate executives' concerns about working from home have been addressed. While it was mainly feared that productivity might suffer or that communication between employees would be restricted, it has been found that in many ways even efficiency could be increased and employees also report a better work-life balance.

How mobile working can be implemented

The change in the world of work came as quickly as the lockdown . Many companies did not have long to prepare for the new situation and often had to rely on provisional solutions first. Many employees use, for example, private notebooks or smartphones for professional activities. A situation that is not sustainable in the long term from a security point of view. In addition, for many employees it is not enough just to exchange data and information via e-mail. What is needed is direct access to the databases as in the office. However, this requires the right IT infrastructure, which must first be created, unless provision was made a long time ago.

Data protection with mobile working methods

When it comes to employees working from homedata security is one of the most important aspects. The right hardware equipment is an essential step towards data security. Even from home, employees should work with the company's own devices and not with devices that are used partly professionally and partly privately. This also ensures that all devices run with the same operating systems and software versions. This standardization makes it easier for IT support to keep an eye on all updates and import them in good time, and to provide quick help in the event of problems. It also reduces the likelihood that programs installed for private use will be infected with viruses and endanger company data.

When working from home, however, it is important that a secured data corridor is set up for access to company servers. Employees can also remotely access company databases as if they were in the office. In order to get all this under one roof, however, a comprehensive concept for enterprise mobility management is required. Martin Cornelius, Head of Sales at GEMA Germany, is one of them, convinced: The challenges in terms of security in home and mobile workplaces are great. It is not only important to implement security solutions, but also to use the appropriate software. The market offers numerous applications and the selection of the right individual products requires many years of know-how. Correspondingly important is the competent support of companies on the way to a functioning and secure MDM solution.

Consistent Enterprise Mobility Management - which solution is suitable?

Especially when a company has so far not focused on mobile working, it is all the more important to find a functioning solution for enterprise mobility management that covers all areas of the company. This includes Mobile Device Management (MDM), with which all devices across the different model categories from notebooks to tablets and smartphones, but also stand-alone PCs can be managed. The IT department should be able to access all devices here in order to be able to offer the necessary support, but also to be able to install updates and ensure protection against attacks. To make this possible, a targeted mobile application management is necessary in order to control and manage individual apps, software and programs remotely.Cloud .

On premise or cloud hosting?

Companies that are in the process of implementing enterprise mobile management will sooner or later have to deal with how the respective solution is set up. The decisive factor here is often whether the databases are installed and managed directly on site on their own servers (on premise) or whether a cloud solution is used. Which variant is chosen often depends on which IT infrastructure is already in place and how well the IT department is set up. An on-premise solution may offer some advantages, but it also involves effort. The servers must also be protected accordingly and set up in such a way that backup copies are made regularly. If, however, a cloud solution is used, the respective provider takes on these tasks

Conclusion: adaptation to new conditions required

Many companies have taken great strides towards mobile working in the past few months. With an EMM solution, this path can be continued into the future in order to take advantage of existing opportunities and increase the company's resistance to crises .
